If you've looked something up in the index for a book published in 2007
and it was there, that index is a candidate for the American Society of
Indexers/H. W. Wilson Excellence in Indexing Award. February 29, 2008,
is the deadline for submitting books published in 2007 for the 2008 award.
The award was established in 1978 to honor excellence in indexing of an
English language monograph or other nonserial print work published in the
United States in the previous year.
Criteria for the award, submission instructions, and
nomination forms are available online at
http://www.asindexing.org/site/WilsonAward.shtml. You can also find it
by clicking on "Advice for Editors and Authors" on the ASI home page, then
clicking on "Awards." Or use the A-Z index. (Good indexes have more than one
way to access information.)
The judging committee is especially interested in seeing
books that presented a challenge to the indexer. Past winners have often
gone to books on unusual or difficult topics, but seemingly simple indexes
elegantly written are also wanted. The committee will be looking at how
effectively and creatively the indexer has addressed challenges and
maintained high standards of index quality, and how well the publisher has
typeset the index.
The ASI/Wilson Award recognizes the normally anonymous
indexers and the publishers who provide high-quality indexes to serve their
readers. The indexer of the winning book receives $1000 and a plaque. The
publisher receives a plaque. This year's winner will be presented at the
Annual Conference of the American Society of Indexers, May 1-3,2008, in
Denver, Colorado.
